The browser remains the only unbundled workspace in the modern knowledge worker's toolkit. Every other application has gotten an AI layer built in, from email with AI summaries to documents with AI editing to messaging platforms with AI assist, but the browser tab, where you actually read, research, and think, is still just a window to the web.
Sam, a policy analyst, opens fifteen tabs one Tuesday morning while researching a healthcare reform proposal. She has background documents in three tabs, a legislative history open in another, a research database running in a fifth. She's cross-referencing data points, trying to connect patterns across the white papers, checking if one policy's assumptions contradict another. An hour in, a potential conflict emerges between two proposals she's been treating as independent. The insight isn't fully formed yet, but it matters if she can reason through the implications.
She opens ChatGPT in a new window. Leaves her research tabs behind. Types out the logic from memory because the AI can't see what she's looking at. Waits for the response. When it comes, she tabs back to her research, scrolls to find the paragraph she was reading, has to re-establish where she was in the analysis. The cognitive load of maintaining two workspaces (research in fifteen tabs, reasoning in a separate window) means the idea fragments. By the time she gets the response from the AI, she's lost the original context and momentum. The connection between the documents stays incomplete because she's managing windows instead of thinking.
This is the gap that has stayed unfilled while everything else got smart.
How AI found every tool but the browser
Marketing automation got AI. CRM platforms got AI. Spreadsheets added AI formulas. Docs, Slides, Gmail, Slack, Figma: nearly every application a knowledge worker touches during a workday shipped an AI feature. Someone decided that tool mattered enough to integrate reasoning. The logic was straightforward: people spend significant time in this tool, so embedding intelligence here changes how they work.
But the browser stayed mostly the same. It got faster. It got better privacy controls. The tab interface matured. But the actual place where knowledge workers spend their time (reading, researching, learning, pulling information together) remained a dumb reading tool. You can get AI elsewhere. You just have to leave it behind.
The cost of splitting your workspace
Switching between tools creates friction that compounds invisibly. You lose context. You lose momentum. You type out summaries of what you're reading instead of having AI that can see what you're reading. You explain your question to a separate tool as if it wasn't in the room where you were working.
For routine work this overhead barely registers. For knowledge work, it's a tax on every insight.
Later that same Tuesday, Sam is still building her case about the policy conflict. She has now sketched out four different scenarios where the contradiction matters. She's building a mental model of how they cascade. She wants to pressure-test that model, consider edge cases, think through second-order effects. She could open ChatGPT. She could describe her full reasoning in a separate tool. Instead, she sits with the incompleteness because the friction of context-switching isn't worth the clarification. The reasoning stays in her head, unexplored, incomplete. The browser never helped her move it forward.
What happens when the workspace is unified
When AI works where your research actually happens, the movement between thinking and reading stops. You read something. You ask about it. The AI sees what you're reading. You refine your understanding. You move to the next source. The same tool travels with you because you never leave it in the first place.
The cost of using AI drops from "open another app and reconstruct your context" to "ask the question you're already thinking." That difference seems small. In practice, it changes which questions you bother asking at all.
Knowledge work means working with information that doesn't fit in a single view. It means holding multiple sources of truth in tension. It means reasoning about patterns that only emerge when you can see them all at once. When the AI layer exists in the browser itself, that reasoning happens in the same space as the research. The workspace stops fragmenting. Sam finishes the day having pressure-tested her model, considered the edge cases, and found the strongest version of her argument because she never had to break context to think.
