The problem
USSD menus assume you can read short English strings quickly and remember where you are in a tree. For a non-literate or low-vision user that is a wall, in front of the money they already own.
Why this one is unusually well-founded
A 148-hour speech dataset of Twi, Fante and Ga banking commands already exists, collected by Ashesi University and Nokwary and openly licensed. It was built for exactly this and nobody has shipped the product.
How it would work
Voice-driven equivalents of the USSD flows people already use, over IVR and WhatsApp, with confirmation read back before anything moves.
Fraud and social-engineering resistance is a design requirement from the start, not an afterthought.
What it needs
A fintech or telco partner. This is not a product you can launch alone — it sits on someone else's rails, by design.
This is a researched proposal, not a commitment. Nothing here has been validated with a paying customer yet.
